OK, I have a 2004 superduty, 5.4 liter, supercab, 4x4, Automatic, with snowplow package, and 410 gears. What are the usual upgrades I can do for power, such as chip or programmer, exhaust, etc?????? Keep in mind that this is my first Ford, and I really dont know all that much about the truck yet. I also just got my new wheels and tires in today. I will try and mount them up tomorrow, and let everyone know if they fit or not.... They are 18x10" Eagle alloy wheels, with 4.5" backspacing, and Nitto terra grappler 325/60/18 tires...
Thanks,
Mark
You named it.. you could do a chip, exhaust, headers, supercharger....
...pretty broad question, what kind of power/money are we looking at here?
By the way, no need for the rude second post, people offer responses when they have something useful to say. People arn't able to check every post everyday, someone with the answer to your question might not check all the time, and need a few days to respond. Everyone does what they can to help others.
Huh... Not to be a tool (although I am, my wife and co-workers will vouch for that.) but the 5.4L is the "economy" engine, not the engine you get for performance.
OK, that being said, you've got a few things you can do:
1) Delete the C2 or 32 option (4.10LS/4.10 gears) and install aftermarket 4.56 gears since you have 33.3" tires instead of the stock 30.6" tires. That should put back some of the power you lost with the tire/wheel size increase. About $1200 since you have to do both front and rear axles. Add $850 if you want to swap the rear LS unit for a locker, while you're at it.
2) Delete the 44E option (4-speed automatic abomination, well, it is an abomination on the 5.4L's.) and put a man's transmission in there; option 445 (A.K.A. a ZF S6-650 6-speed manual). About $3900, $2500 for the transmission and the rest for the accessories and re-flash of your PCM.
3) Delete the 99L option (5.4L V8) and replace it with a a 99S (6.8L V10) or 99P (6.0L Diesel V8). Anywhere from $5500 to $15,000 depending on which engine you select, new or used, and how and by whom this is done.
4) Install a supercharger. A little more expensive than a re-gear, but this will really increase your power level. A few people here have done so with great results. Around $5800, I'm not sure what the install costs. (Nothing if you do it yourself, I guess.
Note that using the "delete" function for options #2 and #3 and going for option #4 is often more expensive than trading your truck in for one that is more suitable. However, options #1 and #4 look preeeeeeeeetty good... Give that phone a tickle and ask Whipple or Paxton about some S/C-age for that 5.4L-age...
Sorry guys, I'm not trying to be rude, I thought I was being funny... I guess not!!! lol....... Thanks for the responses though.... I was just looking for ideas for an exhaust, as well as a chip and air flow sensonr, etc.... Has anyone made these changes, and did you get ANY noticable power gains from them?????????
Thanks again,
Mark
i have the superchip programmer, airraid intake and flowmaster exhaust. Definite difference with stock wheels and tires. once i lifted the truck and put 37s, little sluggish. but still nice.
I have a 5.4CC with 6.5" Lift and 37"tires. I have done: Intake, Grenatelli MAF, TB Spacer, Pulleys, Electric Fans, Cat Back Exhaust (Flowmaster) Diablo Predator Programmer. All the mods had Minimal Changes, Every Little bit helps but nothing as close to the Effect of a Supercharger. I have been researching getting a Lightning Intake manifold and running the Lightning Blower. Not sure yet if it will work I do know the computer needs to be seriously tweaked. I havent done it because of 1. Money and 2. Fear of blowing out a plug which goes back to money. I did the above mods because I enjoy working on my truck and I was hoping to make a little bit more power to get a little better fuel economy. If I could do things over again I would have taken all that money and done gears first, then did the other mods. But hey! That predator is a cool little toy, you can plug it into your computer and DataLog and you can download updates and custom tunes from Diablo. Funnything is the reason I bought it was to make my speedo correct then found out you can only do that on F-150's. DOH! Good Luck with your endeavors and guys dont bash us 5.4 guys, we get into things sometimes and dont know the grass really is greener on the otherside. I found out it is and oh it hurts but hey sometimes your stuck with what you got. 32 more payments!
Thanks for the info guys. I guess I will just look for a flowmaster setup, and do the airfilter kit, with the programmer. Is it worth doing the mass airflow ssensor as well, or will the changes be way too minamal?????
Mark
It depends on what your expectations are. The MAF works great with a Diablo Product because grenatelli sells diablo products and actually makes tunes as well.
The MAF IMO gave me a little better throttle responce and all the mods make it so I dont have to push the gas pedal as hard to get going at stop lights to stop lights to stop lights
I have 35s and 4" lift. It was very sluggish off the line. I got flowmaster set up, FIPK, Hypertech programmer, and 4.30 gears (getting gears installed tomorrow). Close to stock performance after mods. After tomorrow it should be much better because the gears (from what I have read) will make a huge difference.
In order of best to worst:
1. Gears
2. Hypertech Programmer
3. Flowmaster & Intake (tied)
OK, my wheels (18x10" eagle alloys), and my tires (325/60/18) Nitto Terra Grapplers) are on and look GREAT! The truck is completely stock and the only modifiaction I had to make was to shim the front bumper out 1/2 inch. I have my front leveling kit on the way as well, just so I dont have to worry about being careful about rubbing when I make a full turn. If you guys want a picture, let me know. I am just not sure how to upload it onto the web-site....
Looks great....
