My dad likes his well done. I remember one time when we went out he ordered his steak well done, and they came out with a chunk of a boot (laces still in it) first before they brought his steak.
Pretty much any cut of steak, but it has to be a little red in the middle and charred on the outside, high heat and turn only once.
As for going out for steak, forget those expensive big city steak and chop houses, unless you are on an expense account. The hole-in-the-wall places in farm towns can be the best. Jocko's in Arroyo Grande is my latest discovery. The cooking is done outside over a real oak fire.

That place still around? Wow, that takes me back a ways...
hmmmm, this is funny, my roomies and i were talking about steaks last night after dinner. I like it about medium, had me a good new york strip this weekend, making my mouth water again thinking about it......how far is it from lunch time? lol It's gotta be pink in the middle and a little blood in it, brings out the flavor
seriously though, here at school, I have an electric grill. Turn it to 450* and throw on a couple steaks for 10 minutes (5 minutes per side) and they're nice and seared on the outside, nice and raw on the inside...just how I like 'em.
when I can ACTUALLY grill them at home on charcoal, I settle for very rare.
I like steaks where the inside is just slightly pink. Any blood running still and they go back to the grill. I however don't like steaks that are well done or almost burnt.
Most any cut, medium, sometimes medium-rare. I don't care what it's cooked over/on.
The wife likes them burnt to a crisp for some reason.
One of my uncles cooks the life out of everything, starts off with a giant burger patty and ends up serving what looks like a small piece of sausage. I have learned to stay away from BBQs at his house.
