All,
I have a 1990 f-250 4X4 with Auto trans. Recently I have begun to notice a clunking sound whenever I put truck in reverse. I have confirmed that it is not U-joint related. The noise is coming from the transmission!! Am I going to need a transmission soon? I have checked the fluid and it is at correct level, smells fine and was recently changed less than 20k miles ago. I will use the truck to tow a couple of times a year nothing serious. It is my 4th vehicle so it does not get much use. Any ideas of whats going on and is it going to kill my tax refund?
A clunk can be caused by a number of different things.
Most common is that the slip yoke at the rear of the transfer case has run dry. It will clunk when this happens. I've also heard of cracked tranny crossmembers, loose tranny mounts, tranny mounts that needed grease, and a couple others I'm missing.
The good news is that I would bet the noise is not coming from inside the tranny.
Thanks I saw the thread on how to lube the slip yoke will give it a shot later toady and report back. I have to pick up a couple of horses this afternoon and am scared to use the truck....
Andy I broke down!!! Darn it. I tore the u-joint closest to the tranny. It sheared the yoke so that will have to be replaced too. Every one was fine though no one was hurt. I happened on a 4 lane road, with plenty of vision so traffic had plenty of warning. I had one heck of a towing bill they had to tow the truck and horse trailer seperatly. At least it wasn't a bad transmission. Funny I checked the drivesaft for loseness and there was no side to side movement
Don't worry Andy I just finished a couple to ease the "pain" Took the driveshaft down to my mechanic and he said he should have it back in to me in a couple of days, seems the yoke is hard to find. He did not want to reuse it, said if I didn't have farm use he would consider it but due to towing stress it might just repeat.
I am having him replace both u-joints, I noticed when I got a good look at driveshaft that there are grease fittings on u-joints, darn I never knew they were there. I am always greasing my tractor.... Do new u-joints have grease fittings? How often should the be greased?
Most of the better u-joints have grease fittings. I grease mine every other oil change or so. Basically, as long as they don't dry out, they'll last forever.
