Anyone tried painting chrome with clear?

I am trying to find a way to stop that light surface rust from appearing on my chrome. I was thinking of putting on a few coats of clear paint. Has anyone tried this before?

How about using clear paint protection film like 3M's ClearMask?

Seeing that the rims are starting to rust now. You might be out of options, with out re-chroming. I have used a two part poly eurathane on chrome before. It works wonderful. Being two part (epoxy type) clear it goes on then and hardens into a vary hard durable surface. One other product you might want to look ak is Zoop seal. They claim to get 2 years on aluminum and chrome from oxidation and rust. About $100 per application.

Years back I picked up a set of deep dish chrome reverse rims cheap cause they were starting to rust and flake. After cleaning them up with 0000 steel wool and lifting off the really loose flakes I touched up the rust and/or flakes using Testors silver model paint, you know the little tiny square shaped bottles. The secret was to not shake the bottles so that the really shiny aspect of the paint would rise to the top. Using a tiny brush I filled in the chips and pits, using only the surface paint, and wiping the paint off the good chrome before it dried completely ... it would stick to the rust though. I then "clear coated" them to seal away the moisture that would make them continue to rust and also to protect the new touch-up paint job.

The dark spots totally disappeared unless you had your nose right next to the rim, then you could see the imperfections. Ran those same rims on both a 68 Plymouth Sport Sattelite HT and a 70 Barracuda convert. Over all that time I think I only redid the rims when I changed cars. IIRC they still looked darn good when I resold them.

The big thing is keeping the surface sealed and the cc didn't hurt the shinyness either. Never noticed any yellowing with the stuff I used but I don't specifically remember what it was.

Roger
