My 72 F250 camper special with the 390 gets lousy mileage - and gas is $2.78 a gal for cheapy reg here (mid-Calf).
It was looking like I would have to cut back on my driving this summer - which sucked as fishing is about all I have left to do.
Anyway, I just bought an all original 59 F100 shorty - six, 4 speed, and no other options. Not even a radio. Bet I can get 22 MPG out of the old girl if I drive it like the old man I am.
I'll park my F250 and use it only when I need a real horse, otherwise my daily driver is the 59.
Good for you, *****. $2.78? Good Lord. I got pi**ed off when gas got up to $2.21 for the cheap stuff on post at Ft. Rucker. Guess I should count my blessings instead of complaining. I've thought about buying a leather jacket, faceless helmet, chaps, gloves, boots, and...............a scooter.
good luck with that. Every Ford truck I've ever owned got between 10-14mpg. Even the 95 Fuel injected straight 6, 1/2 ton with 5 speed and overdirve only got 14-15...(this does not include the current project. It's lucky to get 10 :-)
as for the helmet, go full face. What good is your head if you lost your face?
Every week I think about selling my scooter after hearing about another rider that got clobbered by some oblivious idot in an SUV, but then I fill it up for about $10 and go 300 miles..not to mention it's crazy fast.
Yea, I understand - 14 is about average for our trucks. I did have a 1964 F100 shorty with the same six but a 3 speed overdrive that would give me 21 MPG at 70 MPH. I think it is a 223 cu inch with a one barrel carb.
Back when I owned it, gas had just jumped from 25 cents to 30 cents - and I was in the military making a whopping $250 a month. But I think the gas we get today is different than it was back then.
I agree with you about the full face helmet - but I wouldn't want anyone to know I was driving a scooter. Didn't know they still made them. The girls used to ride Vespa scooters which were made in France and looked like a Frenchman designed them, and the guys would all ride Cushmans - with a leather saddle bag.
Come to think about it, Vespas could be ridden with a skirt on, and girls did not wear pants.
btw, I just paid $125 to fill the F250 so I could go get my F100. I will be a while getting over that sticker shock.
$125 fill up....that sucks. Mine used to cost that much back when I had the 90 gallon monster tank. but, I think gas was only around $1.50 then. I so miss the days when it was under a $1....
I call mine a scooter, but everybody sees it and says "Greg, that's not a scooter" ....It's a 2005 Yamaha FJR1300. it's like a 2 wheeled Lexus sports coupe...Still, I get upwards of 50mpg in a vehicle that runs 0-60 in under 3 seconds :-) I even got ABS brakes.

the sixs with 4speeds were low geared, so that kind of milage may be a little high, my 223 with overdrive and 3:89 gears just got 19.2 mpg this weekend on a 323 mile trip
I wish we had the same gas up here in Canada. One of your gallons is 3.8 litres to us metric folk. We pay $1.01 a litre for 87 octane. 93 is $1.07 do the math and then you won't feel so bad.
I don't know what the tank behind the seat holds when empty but I have spent over $60 filling that little thing up. My wife's Bronco has taken over $110!! Maybe it's because of the 2010 winter olympics???
......damn canuck taxes.....
San Francisco bay area (Alameda) Valero med grade $2.75_9, filled up today with 3 tanks on the 68 CS a total of 55.6 gallons----$153.40. She will hold 58.4 gallons. Glad I fill once every 7 to 8 weeks.

You are so young. I remember gas a 12 cents a gallon and 9 cents when the gas war was on. You could drive around all saturday night for a buck. And the regular was very good gas, not the junk we have tody.

Back in the "not so distant" past (70's), I remember my parents saying we couldn't go to the beach because we didn't have enough gas money. I scrounged around the house until I found enough for a gallon, $.77. Obviously, we still didn't go. Back then $.77 was alot. There'll come a day when we'll wish gas was only $2-$3 a gallon. There may come a day when enough people will get together and say "enough is enough" and stop driving, using sick days or just calling in saying they don't have the gas to get to work today.
It's bad when you walk away from the gas pumps talking to yourself.
When i use to pump gas for a liviing 15 years ago .88 per now you use your fred myers card the give you .03 off per to bring it down to a cool 2.43 per at least it proves to those tree huggers that we didn't go to war for oil

You might want to crawl under the back-end and read the tag on the differential. I just watched a guy swap a 4.11 out of his 60 F100 that was originally equipped with a 223/4sp. I think the 4.11 was original. He installed a 3.25 with good results.
