The gas guage is broken again! It just sits at empty and doesnt respond. And yes....I have tried putting gas in the tank!
I have already replaced the sending unit and confirmed it is working. I tested it on an ammeter and it puts out a nice range of resistance. If I ground out the wire to the guage it goes to full.
Anybody know how to test the guage and/or if they can be replaced without changing the whole instument panel. Its a custom cab.
If you removed the wire off the sender and grounded it, and the dash guage went to full, it's ok. Have you tried a jumper ground off the sender mounting screws to the body? Also the dash assy should have a good ground for your guages to work properly. I don't knoe what the range of resistance is on your guage, so it could be putting out the wrong amount needed to make the dash register properly. Are all your guages other than fuel working properly? Any momentary quirks like the guages spiking together and returning to normal? If so, the CVR on the back of the dash is bad. It regulates power to the guages by limiting just 6 volts to them.
If the guage goes to full when you ground the wire (the one back at the fuel tank) then your problem is NOT the guage.
Do you have the sending unit properly grounded? It has a little pigtail that grounds it to the back of the cab as I recall.
Or perhaps the float is "sunk"?
If it were the guage for some reason, I am not sure that they can be had. Always have kept an eye open for them, and never have seen one. I have a couple of used ones that I have salvaged, but frankly don't want to part with them for exactly the same reasons. I know that the temp guages were made aftermarket at some point in the past -- I remember helping my Dad replace the temp guage with a new one when I was a kid. The replacement one didn't have as nice of markings. I replaced it with a salvaged one. Anyway..........
Agree, if the gauge moves when grounded, it's not the gauge. How bout a short in the wiring to the sending unit or to CVR. If temp doesn't work either check CVR or wiring to it.
I don't think any of the gauges need the dash to be grounded in order to work.
