I figured out how to read the codes on my computer and found codes 172 and 176: Ox sensor not switching -- always lean (right and left). The codes were in memory -- if you read my last post, the check engine light comes on while towing or while otherwise under big load (going up a hill). It usually stays on until the engine is shut off and then turned back on. Then it stays off. For a while.
Seems strange to have both Ox sensors acting funny. Sort of points to either something screwing up both sensors (bad gas?) or something upstream that causes a lean condition sometimes. But the code says "not switching." What do you all think it could be?
Please post your thoughts -- the manuals I have don't help much more than telling me the codes and I couldn't find the "Ford Fuel Injection" book at the local Borders. I gotta take another trip to Colorado soon and would like to solve this problem in the next couple of days.
the codes 172 and 176 translate over to meaning that the Heated Exhaust Gas Oxygen Sensor (HEGO) voltage signal indicates "lean" These codes have the exact same meaning. The only difference is that 172 refers to "Bank #1" and 176 refers to "Bank #2" Hope this helps.
