engine woes

I have an 83 bronco with a 4.9L engine and a c6 tranny. I was going through 2-4 quarts of oil a week, so I sat down and took the tranny off the engine to change the rear oil seal. Got it apart and found that when they rebuilt the engine 50,000 miles ago, they just siliconed the oil pan and it fell apart. I had to cut one of the torque converter bolts to get it out because it was rounded off. Got a different torque converter, and started putting it together today. I was able to crank the engine over by hand just fine before I bolted up the tranny, but once I got the tranny and engine put back together, the engine was locked tight. Question is what what happened? I'd rather not take the tranny back off, but I could do if needed to. Hope someone can help.

Sounds like you may not have gotten the torque converter all the way in to the front pump. It will bolt up and not turn if this happens.
