I just got a call from the service mgr. at the Holmon Ford dealer here in NJ. My truck was in because it got 12.5 mpg over the course of a full tank that was split about 50/50 - city/highway. He told me that it checked out fine and that while 12.5 mpg may seem a little low, it is in-line with most other explores. He then questioned which gas I use. When I told him Amiaco regular he dropped the line of questioning. Is anyone else getting this type of low mileage? And if so, what did you do about it?
I agree with bcjim, that is pretty low. I have an '04 4dr Limited with the 4.6 V8, Auto, Towing Package and 3.73 Gear and I get about the exact same milage as him (16 mixed & 21/22 Highway). Most of our driving is in the hilly area of SW Virginia. I agree, I would keep a close record over the next 3 or 4 tanks and then question them again if it doesn't improve.
our 04 4.0 got the same as you but now that it is a little warmer im getting a little better. my wife drives about 1.5 miles to work and when it is cold the explorer never warmed up. if i new it would get such crappy mileage i would have bought the 8 cylender. my full size e 250 work van with the 5.4 gets 13.5 all the time.
Do they use MTBE in the gasoline in NJ? They do in MA, and that usually results in a decrease of 5-10% in mpg compared to gasoline without it. But 12.5 still sounds a little low...I have an '05 V8 Limited and get 15 or so city, about 19 highway.
