i have a 1950 ford f1 that im trying to restore and i was having problems with my compression(and spark but thats a whole nother problem). i took off the head and found out that the 2nd valve wouldnt close totally and the 3rd and 4th were stuck open. should i replace the whole system or what
I would take this as an opportunity to do a rebuild on the engine. You could "top" over haul it by just grinding the valves and it might need rings....but once you get the main/rod bearings exposed you might find them worn out too.
you could also just lap the valves but with a few stuck ones you'll have to fix that too.
Someone else can help you here....I don't think the flathead 6 is all that hard to rebuild nor is it very costly.
Spray some penetrating oil around the valves that are stuck open if you have not done it yet. You will also need to pull the intake and exhaust so you can get to the camshaft there are three covers on the side of the motor that expose the cam. From there you can tell if the valve that is not closing 100% is because of adjustment or is partially stuck open also. If that valve is partially open all the time I would figure it is burnt and replace it.
