I am new to the world of Ford trucks. All I have owned have been Chevys. Here lately I have gotten into Fords, F350s imparticular. I want to buy a F350 with a diesel but don't know anything about them. I can't decide from the following:
Year: 1986-1991?
Engine: 6.9 0r 7.3?
Tranny: Auto or Manual?
What should I look out for, and what are advantages/disadvantages of these years/engines?
How many miles is too many on these engines?
Do these year models have problems with rust?
Sorry for all the questions, but this will be my only truck for a long time, and I want to be happy with it.
I have a 1986 F350 Crew Cab Longbed SRW with a 6.9 liter diesel and an automatic right now. I am very happy with it. as for rust I couldn't tell you. I live in texas. The 6.9's and 7.3's are both good engines. Mine has about 79000 miles on it and it uses no oil and smokes very little on start up. Mine is an automatic but I am wanting to change out to a ZF 5 Speed. Mine has 4.10 gears which are a little low for the highway. Hopefully the ZF with the overdrive will help me out there. I haven't found anything yet that I can't hook to and pull though. Hope this helps.
My $.02 worth.
1980-1986 have a problem with rust in the beds. The design of these by Ford was bad,and there isn't much you can do about it. The 87-91 trucks have had some problems as well, but not as bad as the earlier trucks.
I would shoot for the 7.3 if possible, and I would back it with a manual. The reason for this is that they are better for pulling. The engine temp is lower with a manual, and under a heavy load, the manual doesn't overheat.
first of all welcome to ford country brother, and second, 80-86 rust no diferent than a 99, i bet you 12-13 years up the road from now youll see 99 and 2000 models rusted all out, also anything will rust away depending on conditions, ive seen a 92 that looks like swiss cheese.
