I have infinity componant 6" speakers in my 74 F-250 with a alpine 9811 head unit. These speakers are rated to 90 watts RMS and 270 watts peak. I was wondering what amp would be appropriate for these speakers. I was thinking about a 100 watt 2 channel amp but I don't know if that would be too much. What size and what brands do you guys recommend.
I don't know your budget but IMO I think JL has has clarity and quality with their stuff. I've heard good stuff about the Alpine V12 amps too. But as with most things, a lot of this depends on your budget. Brands I don't recommend are Sony, Legacy, or Pyramid. Another brand I hadn't thought much about, but people like, is MTX audio. I'm not a fan of theirs but that's just MO.
I have a memphis 4 channel amp on my speakers and they sound so clear and loud. U should go with a memphis 2 channel amp for sure. Those amps are built to last.
My budget is basically open to what ever amp has the overall best quality. Now here me out I'm not saying that I want or need the most expensive amp out there but I really do want an amp that can perform with some of the best. I have seen amps by Kicker that cost around $100.00 for 100 watt X 2 channel and most of the others are around the same price except Audiobahn. I would be willing to spend upwards of $200.00 or so but I don't need to if there is something better for less money.
I have been rigorously studying the topic of amps recently and I am more confused than ever. From my research I think I have narrowed it down to Audiobahn however, I am unclear on which one I should get. Upon researching what size of amp I need for my speakers I was told that you want to go with a higher wattage amp than what the speaker is rated for. My speakers are rated for 90 watts RMS and 270 watts peak. Should I go with the 100 WRMS @ 4 ohms amp or the 150 WRMS @ 4 ohms amp? I want my speakers to perform to their "maximum" potential but I certainly don't want to blow them. What are your suggestions?
The 100 watt amp should be enough for your needs. The reason we say get more power than your speakers can handle is not so you turn up your gain to 100wRMS, but where the gain is set where you don't get distortion caused from the amp.
ie. You have a sub that's rated 300 wRMS. Your amp is rated 300 wRMS, but only when the gain is up all the way. When the gain is turned all the way up, the amplifier will start clipping (introducing distortion) but it will be at that 300 wRMS. Now if you have your 300 wRMS sub, and a 350 wRMS amp, you will turn your amp up to ~90% where it's not clipping (distortion), but is ~300 wRMS which is what your sub could handle.
