No answer
Where would I go to find an answer to my question about the towing strength of car close ratio 5sp's? Some have a 1st gear down around 4.00 which is close to a T19 and an underdrive or T case could be used for an extra low gear if needed. Thanks, Bob

There are no stock non-OD car 5 speeds that I can think of. Even '70s 5 gears in Euro and Japanese cars were od.
It is easier to run an OD with a shorter diff gear, as that way you can make all the components lighter.
The "Doug Nash" 5 speed was 5th direct, and lives on from Richmond Gear:

Your easiest swap is to a ZF. I has the lower 1st gear, which will help get you rolling with your load. The gear spacing is ok, and it has OD so you can run a 3.73 or there abouts diff if need be or 4.11 with taller tires.
I have the 4 speed OD with 3.50s and 31 inch (nominal) tires. I am thinking about a T5 as I don't tow and it will give me a slightly lower first, get rid of the grand canyon between 2nd and 3rd, and retain OD. I'd also consider the M5OD if I could find a good one or a ZF if one would fall from the sky for free or at least less than the $1500+ that they seem to go for.

My thoughts
Everything I read says that direct is the efficent gear to run in, because it is straight through with no extra gears turning. I've been thinking about the Richmond Gear 5sp. Guess I need to visit with them about the load on the output. Input would be no problem. (next would be trying to find a used one).

running direct (1:1) as your final gear depends on the tire diameter, the available torque, the load, and the gearing in the rear end. There is no way anyone can make a statement like that without taking many things into consideration.
But that aside, I'll agree that the ZF is a darn good tranny, and 4th is 1:1 so if you want to sit in a "direct drive" ratio of 1:1, shift your way to 4th and sit there.
But I have to tell you... the mileage difference between 4th and 5th on my crewcab (351W, ZF 5sp, 3.55 gears) is noticable. I can even tow in 5th, until I hit a steep grade, so you may end up using it anyway.
Unloaded, in 5th, doing 65, I typically get 14mpg with this combination. Which I think is darn good considering the 340K mile windsor is dead-tired.
