Engine ran radically. 2.9 lit. ranger, fuel injected, 5 speed. What transpired, I had just driven for 20 minuets, on belt way to heat it up to temp, ran good no problems. Stooped to shop for 1 hour, when I started it up it started to knock hard and shake, oil pressure dropped, and the lifters rattled radically not just tapping. I drove it for ten miles on and off it would get better and worse but never returned to full power. Now it will not start, wants to fire up, one or two cylinders fire. I have disconnected the exhaust so it is not the cat, checked the wires acceptable resistance, added new plugs, plan to check the rest of the ignition system but could it be in the fuel distribution system, like maybe a clogged filter, injector problem or a leak, any ideas or experience? any help appreciated.
The plugs were Champion copper plus, two were reddish in color and others were normal, dark black. One had electrode erosion on a slant slopping down towards the electrode. The oil was dirty, nothing unusual, no water in it.
I changed the oil pump, and screen, while doing this I had no pressure on the fuel rail, at the pressure regulator. I want to check both fuel pumps, so I figured I would disconnect them some where to isolate the pumps and feed battery voltage to them, But I need some hose and clamps first. I also had problems with a fusible link, 20 g. the engine would cut out, and just puff, sort of, but it stopped, and I could not and still can't find any locally to replace. Know of a place on line that takes checks for parts?
