upgrade time?
. I have a 1988 efi inline 6 in my 77 ford f-150 pickup and,I've looked in to upgrades for it. To make it as fast as it can go and snazz that truck up for 5k in my opinion go to jegs or summit and buy a crate engine (351 or 460 would be perfectly suited). If you are beant set on building up the inline 6 it's not the motor itself you have to be worried about it's getting the computer to work with your upgrades. I beleive the speed density is only good for about 10% overbuild or underbuild so putting an extra 150 hp through it and expecting it to run correctly or at all is just not impropible. To get your computer to work right you are looking at dyno time and reflashing of your eec or converting it to another type of computer (1st gen lightning is said to work without to much of a hassle). As for the motor itself if you still want to stay with inline 6 your looking at about 300 hp and 400ft lbs of torque with a very good build up. You would need a port and polish, new cam, bigger injectors (size depends on how much power you are expecting) Stock is 14 lb hour. Also would need to convert everything to arp studs heavier duty everything pretty much from pistons to rods so on.....
Look in to the "my built 300" thread, search for that he has a 300 hp 400ft lbs of torque dyno'd and built naturally aspirated. You can get some ideas from it but, don't expect to duplicate his build as your fuel injected and will require different things that a carb'd motor wouldn't. For ex. a 5.0 throttle body, bigger injectors bigger, electronic fuel pump probably and other shizzle....
In a more practical sense if you do plan on putting a crate engine in or building up a junkyard 351 or 460 or such it will be cheaper and much faster. getting 350 hp outa a 351 windsor is about as easy as putting a cheap set of aftermarket heads, new carb and, intake on it. Post back for more questions. as i've been researching how to build my efi engine for quite some time, and have aquired a lot of knowledge from the "experts/old timers on these forums".
