I have owned several Ford trucks, and IO currently own a '99 SD w/ 5.4, and am very happy with it. Due to high mileage and a need to upgrade from the Super Cab to a Crew Cab, I'm contemplating purchasing a new truck. I always order my vehicles, and I am too late to order a 2005. I have to wait until June to order a 2006. From what I have read, there shouldn't be any significant changes between the 2005 models and the 2006 models.
I was going to buy a F-250, 6.0, auto trans., 3.73 LS, Crew Cab, 4x4, with other cosmetic stuff. I have read this forum for several months, and to be honest, there doesn't seem to be alot of satisfied Ford SD owners. I keep reading about poor mileage, tranny problems, computers needing flashing (several times without satisfaction), and other issues. I really do not want to spend 45K and deal with this many service issues. I'll also be real pissed to get 8-10 mpg. Are the Super Dutys declining in quality or is this forum just hearing from the vocal minorities? Thanks for allowing me to write in.
I was one of the minority who bought a troublesome truck (early 03). But I wouldn't trade it right now for a brand new Dodge or Chevy. I see too many of them in my rearview mirror to impress me. Keep in mind a large portion of the posters on this forum are here trying to gain knowledge and solve their problems. There are untold thousands of happy 6.0 owners that we never here from. The control systems on the 6.0 are very complicated and problems are to be expected for the first couple of years of production. Read up on the changes which have been made to the 6.0 and you'll see the problems weren't just swept under the rug by Ford. Nearly every major component of the engine control system has been improved and updated since the 03's hit the showrooms. When looking at owner complaints try to rule out the ones caused by incompetent or misinformed service personnel and see what you have left. I, for one, have seen a MAJOR difference in competentcy between various dealer shops. My .02!
I only have about 3200 miles on my 2005 250 PSD Lariat 4x4 ... I love it ... I'm getting 18-19.5 mpg on the freeway and 16.5 around town (computed). The build date on my truck is 19 Feb 05 .... it is considered a job 2 truck so maybe I got one that had all the bugs worked out ... I don't expect it to be without issues but show me a vehicle that doesn't have issues .... this is the best truck I've owned ...
fraank is there any way for you o find out the program your truck is running my build date 2005 4x4 250 crew cab gets 12.5 max ford says here is no reprogram
It does seem that many of the problem trucks have after-market items on them. I'm not sure if that is the cause or the effect of some of the realiability issues. I'll probably still order the 2006, but there does seem to be an inordinate amount of issues with the 6.0.
Go with the 350, don't think the extra cost amounts to a lot, identical truck, higher GVR. Also weigh different option groups, I went with a Lariat, and wound up getting more content for just a couple of dollars more, compared to an XLT with just the options I wanted.
I have an 04 6.0 TS with 1 Yr., and 27K, not one problem. Warmer weather getting 14 + city, highway is too subjective for me, seems the faster you go, the better the MPG. 17.6 from Florida to NY in early Dec., doing 70-85 mph.

Remember, this is a forum and a "soapbox" if you have a problem.
The vast (and I mean VAST) majority of SD owners are extremely happy with their truck.
So far you can count me as one of the happy 6.0 owners.
2005 KR CC DRW 4WD 6.0 with 7,000 miles and so far no issues.
The '05 doesn't get quite the mileage my '02 did (16 vs 20) but I will write at least part of that off to being a dually with the 4.10 gears vs the SRW with 3.73's.
Your right there have been some issues with the PSDs. However for every ten or so that you have read about there are 100s out there doing very well with no issues.
Like you I have been reading and researching since around the year 2000, thats when my brother got his and I had to own one. I live in Mi. Pulling boats, trailers and other toys, there is no better choice in 4x4 than a PSD in my opinion. I have talked with many Psd owner over the last couple of years. I could not find one that wanted to sell
his Truck. Sure there have been problems, but most have them have been worked out in the Job #2 build, My 2005 F-250CC 4x4 tow Comand, in True Blue Met With Silver Met Trim will be Built next Monday 4/25/05 . I expect to average at least 16mpg.
maybe a little higher on the Interstate, as long as I don't hammer down. Sorry this is so long, don't be scared, ITS ONE HELL OF A TRUCK! GOOD LUCK!
Bombero,
I am one of the "problem truck" owners and I can tell you that if I were you I would probably buy the Ford.
Would I buy another? Probably not, but that is not because the trucks are bad but because of the way I have been delt with by Ford up to this point.
Go ahead and take the plunge, just be sure to look it over carefully when it arrives, test drive it, and what ever you do DON'T LET THE DEALER PREP IT before you take delivery.
Just tell them to remove the plastic covers and that is all. Wash it yourself or risk getting swirls and scratches like I did, besides it allows you to get a real close look at the whole truck
we get about 14 average and 16 highway out of our 05 f-350 3.73 ag truck. but that with an ag teacher with a leadfoot. and they have not had any problems out of it.
I am happy with mine at 43,000 miles and 1 transmission (my fault). Most of us here are trying to get more hp and tq from them and parts break during hot rodding. I am sure that if I would have bought the Prius, I would have wanted better brushes and bigger batteries maybe even more powerful magnets LOL. I couldnt (or didnt want to) take mine off level 5 with the Edge Attitiude combo, I wanted to race everything that came up to me at a light. Drive normal and you will be happy, mileage is decent. I have seen anywhere between 13.5 city to 22 hwy on mine.
I purchase my 05 CC KR 4x4 in October and have 13,000 flawless miles. MPG ranges from 18.5 on the interstate to 14.5 in the city. Truck is completely stock for now, but a tuner will be installed shortly. With the fuel prices I would sure like to see 20+. By the way these MPG's are based on no load.
