Okay, i have a 460 in my 1989 f250 excab.
Im using oil, not leaking from filter or any other area on my engine, not even the
pvc its okay.So im driving along at highway speeds say 65 - 70 I stomp on it
nothing as far as exhaust smoke but when my speed stables out say at 70 and i
let off the gas i get a black smoke out the pipe thuse the reason for my tire and
rim being black as coal. Is this the quart of oil im putting every 100 to 150 miles
depending on how i drive.
Oil smoke is normally blue.... at least in Ohio is it lol. Black smoke is unburnt fuel which is expensive right now. Depends on how many miles are on it. I have a 95 f-150 with a 351 and use up a quart and a half in 2 weeks if I keep the RPM's under around 2800. If I get them up over 3000 I'll use more oil. I am just shy of 209K miles also. With a 460 I wouldnt think you'd need to get the RPM's much past 2500. Good time to check is when u first start it up and its cold. See if you see any blue smoke.

well by the maintenance records it had a 104000mi on it, im at about 114000 know,
anyhow on start up theres no blue smoke, and i tend to have to put oil in more often
if im on the highway more verse the back roads to work. Puzzled?
Run some searches on 460 oil consumption. I have seen some puzzling questions on this topic. Put my login name in the search if you don't go straight to it. Check your codes and fuel pressure to make sure you don't have other problems.
Go to http://fordfuelinjection.com/?p=13 and it will tell you how to pull the codes for your truck. Theres a link on the right hand side that will tell you what each code means.
that's quite a bit of oil consumption, you should be seeing something from the exhaust in the way of blue smoke. The leaking may be only occuring when the engine runs. This is the case on an old sedan I own. The extra pressure of the oil pump when the engine is running causes the leak. But even this isn't enough to account for that amount of oil.
If the oil was pumping out while i was driving, where would the
most likely place it would come out at? so i can look in the area and maybe see something. And could i reproduce the leak while
reving rpms while sitting static?
Mine did too before it started knocking. Started running alil funny, went through the entire thing couldn't find anything wrong until it started knocking, tore it down and the #1 cylinder was no good. Piston skirt was scuffing the cylinder walls. The reason it ran funny was because the cylinder wasn't holding any or very little compression.
I was leaning towards the valve guides, never would think it to be
piston skirt, maybe the oil ring-s. anyhow what my plan is to replace this motor with a brand new one which im in the process
of saving for. In the meantime ill keep oil in it and run it hard.
