I have only owned my truck for a few months but every so often I get this problem. I startup the truck and get big clouds of white smoke. It only comes out ofr maybe 2-3 min then goes away. Another thing is it does not happen everytime I start it only sometimes. The truck is an 86 2.9L. Thanks in advance.
Assuming the vapor cloud is not due to cold weather, it's probably a head gasket or cracked head. The 2.9L is an engine that cannot tolerate being overheated; just one time usually results in damage. I'd check your coolant level and monitor it for coolant loss without leakage. I'd also take a look at the dipstick; brown/white milkshake apperance all indicate coolant in the oil.
Thanks for the quick reply Cowboy. I literally joined this site like 3 hours ago and I have already seen about 10 recent posts about the cracked heads. I wish it wasn't true but it is most likely the problem. I can remember a couple months ago on the highway and I saw the temp gauge go higher than normal. It probably happened right then. About the vapor thing, Its not possible considering it occurs in 80 degree weather down here in south florida. Thanks again and I guess I am going to have to tear her apart and check for the crack.
