Ok I have a 65 F100 LWB. It has the carrier bearing and the small (I guess) 2" drive lines.
Has anyone ever converted to a modern 4" drive line and if so can you get rid of the carrier bearing?
I have aquired a Gearvendor over/under drive and was just feeling out my options. They say you can either bolt it direct to tranny or put the Gearvendor in the place of the carrier bearing.
So can a 4" drive line span a LWB without the carrier bearing?
You will need a slip yoke or spline somewhere to allow for length changes. The COM I just pulled from my 66 had a bolt on yoke on the tranny and spline slider at the carrier brg. I replaced it with a C6 and a one piece driveshaft from the 84 donor. (slip yoke at tranny tailshaft)
I have installed a Doug Nash OD unit in my '66. The Doug Nash unit is out of production, but US Gear bought them out a number of years ago; the principles are the same.
My truck has the 2 piece propellor shaft with a central carrier bearing, but it was replaced by a one-piece behind the OD. The output shaft on the OD is bolted to a U-joint set into with a female splined yoke. The driveline has a male splined section welded; it provides the slip action necessary to allow for spring flex under load.
The other end of the propellor shaft bolts onto the rear chunk just like normal.
