Quick Key Question

I have a 2000 F-250 Super Duty with a V10 that I bought at an auction. It came with one key that works the ignition, but does not unlock either door or the tailgate. I am assuming that the original key was lost and that someone replaced the ignition lock cylinder but did not match the doors, however I am not sure about this. The other possibility is that the truck originally used a two key system like the older trucks.

Can anyone with one of these trucks confirm that they use a single key system? Can a dealer replace my door lock keys based on the VIN, or will I have to rekey the whole truck? Any other ideas as to the fastest and least costly way to sort this little problem out would be appreciated.

BTW: This is a non-PATS (thin key) truck.

A friend of mine has an '00 F-350SD. His is single key. Ditto our old '00 F-250 gasser.

Check the owner's manual leather case to see if you can find a small piece of laminated white paper with a code on it like X00000. That's your key code. Any locksmith can cut keys from that. I believe the dealer can access the code via VIN, somewhere.

Don't worry about the PATS... even my new 2005 F-350SD isn't PATS.

Thanks for the help. That's what I thought it should be. I looked all through the owner's manual and assorted documentation right away looking for the key code tags, but they are not there, so hopefully a dealer can retrieve them. I guess I'll find out for sure on monday. It kind of sucks not being able to lock the truck right now though!

In the worst case you can take out one of the locks (maybe a glove box lock ?) and a locksmith can make you a key from that

Thumbs up

The dealer should be able to make new keys using your Vin#
