Ok, a silly question, perhaps... I purchased a canopy with full rear doors and need to remove my tailgate. Any secrets? I have already broken one torks bit socket and will be making a trip to town tomorrow for a new one. What is the easiest way to get to the bottom torks bolts? Beginning to think I may not want this canopy after all. Thanks for the help.
I find that the best way to loosen tork screws is to place the bit in place, then take a hammer and hit it pretty hard a few times. By that, you make sure the bit is as far in as possible, and you also loosen the bolt by doing it.
At least it has worked for me
I take it you have to remove the hardware that holds the tailgate onto the truck as well as the tailgate itself.
What works well for me is to use one of those impact drivers similar to this: http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/item....re&dir=catalog
It's a 3/8 drive that you put the torx on and then strike it with a fairly heavy hammer. It produces a shock to loosen the bolt as well as twisting it at the same time. At $50.00 it might be a tad expensive just to get the tailgate off, but hey, you have it for the future then!
Well, thanks for the replies. I went to town and bought a new socket and a 1/2" to 3/8" adapter to use my 1/2" impact gun. It still didn't budge!! I then got out the oxy acetylene torch and removed my taillights and heated up all of the bolt threads. Removed the bolts then with a 6" 3/8" ratchet!! Seems like the trusty folks at Ford just love to coat everything with locktite..... anyway, thanks for the replies, it is a done project. Now if my neighbors would just chill, seems like they didn't think the air tools at 6:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning was very nice, go figger!!
That's the best tool ever invented for loosening screws, torx, and allen headed hardware, as long as you have a 3/8" drive apex holder.
I take it you have to remove the hardware that holds the tailgate onto the truck as well as the tailgate itself.
I caught that too. There are no tools requires to get the tailgate off. The pivot plates, cable pins, and latch hardware can removed after the tailgate is off.
