I have a 70 bronco halfcab, u14 vin, with a 170ci IL6. What is the transmission number (Ie c3, c4) and will a 250ci motor bolt up without any major mods?? I need more power but I am not willing to commit to the 302. Thanks for any help/input on this matter. R R
I'm assuming you have a stock 3 speed setup. The factory 3 speed behind the 6 cylinder is a HEF.
If the 250 shares the same external dimensions and bellhousing pattern as the 170- 200, then it should work. I remember the 250 being from the same engine family, but I can't remember any of the specifics.
Thats what I am kinda wondering. I want to upgrade my engine but i dont want to have to change the transmission. I dont have a 250 on hand to compare with. I do have the stock 3 on the tree. I will have to find an old life long machine shop guy and ask him. Thanks for the reply. RR
So the crux of your query is... is a 250 is a direct bolt-in swap for a 170? This question is not Bronco specific. I'd bet you'll get a quick answer if you post this in the Engine forum.
Seems to me I've read that the 250 block uses the same bell as the 289-302. If so, your tranny probably won't bolt up as it sounds like you have an automatic.
You can get some info at the above site about a 200--those are much better than 170s and are 7 main bearing motors that will take some upgrades and live to tell the tale.
Good to see an inquiry such as yours, as the usual inquiry is "can I put a 7.3 diesel in my early Bronco..?
The 200 is a torque-y little motor! I can't say if you can bolt up or not, but being that they are both inline 6's in the same era, I would think they would. Let us know what you find out!

- what's wrong with that? J/K! 3-on-the-tree is a 3spd manual tranny!
