I would like to get a feel for what a do it yourself oil change costs all total from the perspective of all of the major conventional and synthetic oils including all filter and all required parts.
If possible please itemize your costs and state where you buy your materials.
I use shell rotella synthetic, $14 filter and $40 or so for oil both from walmart. You can also use the search at the top of the page and read how much others are paying.
Shell Rotella(reg) $59 at Jiffy Lube. Negotiate a discount and let them do it.
Or you can buy it in bulk(55gallon drum) from Sams Club and do-it-yourself for about $50 or so. Has anyone else found synthetic oil (rotella) at Walmart for $10 a gallon?
I think the Synthetic is 13.98 or so. But last time I was there they only had 1 Gallon jug and 3 qt's and I got the last filter. Me thinks maybe they are not going to carry it any more.
$16.50 oil filter from local parts shop and 4 gallons (25.88) one time and 3 gallons (19.41) the next two times of Castrol 15-40 from wally world at $6.47 a gallon every 5K miles.

$11.00 oil filter (including shipping from our sponsor Oil Guard) a few squirts of grease and $27.00 for 15 quarts of Motorcraft 10w30 PSD Oil. Plus the one time expense of a Fumoto Valve, a must have, makes them changes a breeze every 5k. Would never pay someone to do mine. Fuel filters are very easy to change as well and if you get em through Oil Guard they are very reasonably priced.
I use synthetic oil--Mobil Delvac 1 5w-40. The oil alone costs $87 per change. The filter is $15. Therefore, total cost to change is $102 every 5,000 miles. Do it myself in about 1 hour.
damn, I was told by some 7.3 liter guys to use 15-40, is that the right weight to use. I live in texas and it is hot as a pisser. How about all those adds on ebay where you can buy like 6 filters for 45 bucks and crap. What seems to be a good filter to use.

15w-40 is thicker than 10w-30 you want a thicker oil in the hotter climates
