Proper Timing for '95 2.3L
I have always had to run at least 89 octane, even then the valves rattle in partial throttle conditions on flat ground. I usually run 93, and it does better (predetonation is still present at times). It seems the higher the octane, the better it runs. The tank before last, I but two bottles of octane booster in (the kind safe for the cat) and 93 octane. I was amazed at the power gain, and finally there was no rattling (probably due to the fact I had 100 octane in the tank??).
This does not make any sense to me, retarded timing, and predetonation. Could it be a bad knock sensor? What should the correct timing figures be for my truck?
Look at post #8 also.

You should try this before going through the other parts related to ping.
