drumlinecowboy,
I was not criticizing the maintenance of your truck, the tone of your message inferred that you had NO brakes, I was pointing out that, with a properly maintained vehicle, you at least had SOME brakes but perhaps didn't realise it at the moment,
if you lose the front brakes, you still have 20/30% braking on the back, the same as the emergency brake but with more control.
FSC... i didnt have any brakes at all. the line was not holding any pressure. the only brakes i had was my tranny. gettin it off the tow truck (flat bed) the brakes didnt hold at all on the momentum of my rear tires coming off the ramp fomr 3/4 down. i had to use my tranny engine off to stop the truck and like 1 mph. the back brakes were not holding me at all and i know they work.

Scary feeling huh? I work as a medic for a 911 service. We have an old 1956ish f100 that usto be part of the fleet towing a trailer back in the day. This truck was kept in storage for a couple years and we went to go bring it for a ride to see how it does. Called tow to bring it down but we figured we would take it around the block (it started right up) brakes, everything was good to go. My partner hoped in the 125,000.00 dollar squad and i hoped in the truck. We start to drive (he pulls in front of me before i could get going). Make a few turns fine, brakes are still great. Turn number three was up to a gate. Was going slow so i didnt touch the brakes till the end, pushed them to the floor. Tried to pump them. Reached for the E brake and aimed for the bumper of the ambuance. Crash, e brake caught it, but not in time to prevent all damage. F100 bumper was to low and squad was to high. Did a little damage. What a scary feeling though.
ouch man. at least the ambulances have diamond plate, but poor ford truck. i watched an idiot back ours into the wall next to the bay as she was attempting to back it in2 the bay.
I remember doing a brake job on my dads truck, pumped the brakes, got the fluid flowing and all. drove it up to 60 and braked from there and it was fine. I'm rolling through town about 15 minutes later going 15-30 mph and i go to stop and I have nothing, pedal hit the floor. when that happened the clutch hit the floor and i was swapping gears. found a parking lot and whipped it around until it stopped, put on the foot ebrake and took a look to see what was going on. visual inspection, nothing was wrong, hop on back in and the pedal has pressure again. took it back to the school to get her on the lift and pull a tire to see if anything was leaking anywhere that i missed on the road. had no problems with her on the way back, or there on out. not bad when you're riding on the back of a cop coming to one of the few stop lights in town. the cop happened to be the cop that frequents the community college there(which is where my HS auto tech class was). I got to talking to him and let him know what happened, he was like wow, and then came under to double check me to see if anything was wrong that i may have missed. saw no problems, put her back on the road, took her back to my dad and he has had no problems other than a slight vibration from warped rotors.
i had something like that happen a while back, i was doing 15 in my community. i pulled over and i saw it was a lack of fluid. i fixed that real quick and got back on my way. on this 1 i had a VERY visable leak, as when my dad hit the pedal for me to find where it was, it almost sprayed me in the eye. 3 nicle lil streams o brake fluid all over my wheel well...

Well, I can't speak for all vehicles, but if what you say is correct, then answer this:
Why does the brake pedal go to the floor when bleeding brakes? If you have one bleeder open, the pedal will go to the floor. Just about everyone in here has bled brakes before, right? Has anyone else noticed that you have to open both fronts to bleed? I've bleed LOTS of brakes, and never saw what you describe happening.
Assuming everything is as it should be, the brake pedal will go down until it comes up against the second system. it wont go all the way to the floor.
In a dual system, you have in effect, two pistons stacked in a single cylinder.
In a traditional dual system, the front brakes are paired to one side and the rear brakes are paired the the other side.
In a diagonal system, one front brake and the opposite rear brake is paired to each side of the system.
I'm not sure what you mean by having to open both fronts to bleed, you do have open each bleeder in turn but not at the same time and it is important to bleed in proper sequence, RR, LR,RF,LF.

Reason: grammar
I'm pretty sure fsc is right because w/ no rear brakes.....basically at all......my truck still stops really well......but the pedal does go down really far
This happend to me, once. A long high speed run and the rear brake line fractured. Speed was excesive and wouldn't you know it, an FHP cursier facing me at the stop sign I blew through.
