Thumbs down A/C woes

It's finally getting warm here, so we went to use the A/C on our 2000 X and no cold air. Took it to the shop and they recharged it. Two days later it was warm air again. We did this three times, and they can find no dye anywhere. They put new caps on the inletes at no charge hoping that would fix it, but it didn't. Today, they filled it up again, and the sniffer is picking up readings at the dash vents, which indicates it's the A/C evaporator, which apparently is under the dash. The shop manual is quoting 7.5 hours of labor. With parts, this is going to cost around $800. (The good news is that if this doesn't fix it, they said they won't charge me a dime). Has anyone else had this problem, or know of any other places the X may leak where it's hard to find? I'd really rather them not tear the dash apart and then find it's leaking somewhere else.

Thanks,

Unhappy not good

evap cores are a real pain for us techs, sniffers will not work well because of the air flow setting off false signals. What i do is put in 2 tubes of dye and let it run out side on a hot day so it drips on the ground. After a while go out shine the black light at the water.. if it glows you know for sure. it's the only way i have found to save my six. good luck
