Recently had a nasty surging problem with my truck (89 7.3L). Bled the system, triple checked flow rates, fuel filter, return line, injectors (all in a day drove me crazy).
The front tank had 3/4 a tank of fresh diesel in it. I focused on running the truck from the front tank trying to fix the surging. Rear tank had a 1/4 or less. Added 4 gallons to the rear and now no surging.
Is this is a bad selection valve, selection switch? I'm running off the front tank so I thought. Anyone got a check list of what to check?
my truck is doing similar. 89 7.3. i've noticed that sometimes when my truck surges on one tank i can switch it to the other and it stops. not any particular tank. ex: if i am on the front switch to back and gone and vice versa. also when it surges the fuel filter light will come on. as i accelerate the brighter the light gets. ive changed the filter and no change. added fuel cleaner and cetane booster ans still the same. going to try the pump test where you hook it to schrader valve.
sounds like a possible air leak,my 92 would surge at idle but as soon as i throttled up it went away.
found a suction leak in the steel lines along the frame rail beside the front tank.
Jonjay...check the lift pump fuel pressure and quantity, your light is telling you there is a vacuum in the filter head. This is a sign of a plugged filter, bad lift pump or blocked fuel flow.
