Question Rebuild Injection Pump

Is it possible to rebuild my injection pump myself?

If so, how much of an undertaking is it?
(lot's of time...little money)

Is there a kit?

A couple other questions...Is there a more thorough way to bleed the air out of the fuel system than just using the Schrader Valve?...Does the timing ever get off by itself and if so how can I re-time it or at least check if it needs to be re-timed?...Can I have my IP tested before I rebuild or replace it?

Thanks in advance,
Ladd

Nope not without much training and tools........

Timing can go off if the governor flex ring/internal rubber parts in your IP are disintegrating and jam or block return flow.

To have your IP tested is not a normal proceedure, an old IP will contaminate the test machine so it's not normally done due to cost to repair test machines..

Do you know of anywhere to get a rebuilt IP for cheap. It doesn't seem like something I should get at a scrap yard.

This is not a daily-driver for me so I don't want to spend $400+ that NAPA wants for a rebuilt when I'm not even sure that it's bad. I'm thinking I'll just wait until I can afford to have it towed up to the International shop here in Portland. They have a guy that is supposed to be a wiz on the Powerstroke and Pre-Powerstrokes.

It seems that I put $50 or $100 in to it here and there and it still doesn't run. The engine may not be worth keeping in it.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Ladd

You should have a C6 trans.check either the tag in your door jamd and see what it says under the axle location. you can also look at the rear end cover and see if it has a tag on it.I too wish their was a way i could rebuild the ip my self. guess there is some specializes testing equipment for it.

Someone posted that Tim at accuratediesel.com sold him a rebuilt IP for $215. That'd be a real good price. I bought one from MWFI a little while ago for $299.

Yes, you can rebuild the pump yourself. You can order parts through any Stanadyne dealer. On the other hand, if you've never done it before, it'd be a pretty confusing undertaking.

If the pump is newer than '86, it probably doesn't have the rubber governor ring in it anyway. As far as I know, all OEM pumps after that year were built with a metal ring.

Also as far as I know, every rebuild shop uses metal rings in rebuilt IP's.
