I am working on my 1995 Aerostar 3.0. I can not get the differential fill plug out. It is rusted solid and now stripped on the inside. If someone can tell me the exact amount of fluid needed for the differential I can put the fluid in a plastic bag and do the old racer trick of just sticking the bag in the diff. Once you start it up and the gears move it will tear the bag to tiny pieces and voila. But to do this I need to know how much fluid to use. Please help quick. It is getting cold fast and I am very tired.
It should take about 3 qts.
An easier way than to use a bag is to remove the ABS sensor from the top of the housing and pour the oil in there.
Well, We got it done. We decided to use the ABS sonsor hole to fill, before seeing this post. My only hold back was getting the level right. Well I made a dipstick for the diff. I cut a straight part of a metal coat hanger and stuck it down the hole. Once it bottomed out I marked the location of the ABS hole. I then used a square to get the distance from that hole to the bottom of the fill hole. I transfered this measurement to the dip stick and used tape to make the levels more visable. We acutally over filled it with just under 3 quarts. I got my pump out and took some out until it was perfect. We made it through. There is still some noise and vibration I need to trace down, but this thing is running very well now. So far we have done:
Spark Plugs
Plug Wires
Distributor Cap & Rotor
Serperntine Belt
PCV Valve
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Transmission Fluid & Filter
Differential Fluid
Front Rotors & Pads
2 New Tires
Just a thought, but if you are tracing down a slight vibration have you checked your U-joints for wear.

We are looking into the other problems. I know that I did not tourque my bolts on my rotors enough, so I believe my bearings in the front are shot. They are origional any way. That is my next try. While I am under there I will do a full instpection.
What bearings am I looking for. I need the front inside and outside bearings. I have looked a bit and not found seperate bearings for each. I will search more, but I am curious.
