I have a 98 f250 light duty that locks up in the rear end on wet and dry days. I average 2 brake jobs a year. No one can tell me why my breaks drag and lockup with little pressure. When I change the pads, they are all cracked up and thin. ABS light only came on a couple of times and has stayed off. Just put on new wheel clyinders.

How can I tell if its the RABS, combination valve, or an internal leak in the master clyinder pistion?
Thanks, 79 BRONC

If the rotors or drums are slightly out of true, this will contribute to locking up. A little surface rust adds grip. This shouldn't be such a problem if the rotors/drums are true. The pad is going to hit the high spot first. The problem is the added grip due to rust, or other contaminants. Once they connect, the wheel locks up.

If your wheels are locking up during braking, it's time for a brake job.

How are your front brakes doing? How about your front wheel bearings? If front bearings are bad, it will prevent your front brakes from working properly. Your rear brakes will then be working over time. It's light in the rear, not to mention that when you step on the brakes, you shift the weight to the front of the truck and off your rear tires.

Maybe the pads on the front are glazed? My guess is that they aren't removing the calipers to check the pads. The look at the back and see there's still meat left on the pads....

Check: front wheel bearings, and get front brakes done as well - watch them do the front!

Thanks Guys, All The Rotors Have Been Cut And The Rears Are Actually New Drums, Last I Checked The Front Pad Where Ok. I Havent Checked The Bearings Lately. I'll Be Rechecking The Pads This Weekend.

Is There Any Way To Rule Out The Rabs, Or The Combination Valve. The Hanyes Manual Is No Help.
Thanks 79 Bronc

had an E250 van that did the same brake locking in wet weather... front wheels would lock and skid with even light braking pressure. It turned out to be the "RABS" valve (or whatever it is called) that controlled brake fluid to the rear brakes. They (rear brakes) wouldn't do their share of braking. As soon as I replaced that valve, everything was good agian...actually better than ever. I don't know if your vehicle has one... but if it is Ford, it might. Hk
