my 93 explorer won't shift into OD...its smooth in shifting up until it should go into OD rpms at 65 mph are about 2600 and gas milage is 10-12 mpg... any ideas???
3-4 shift is controlled by the EEC-IV computer on your A4LD. 1st thing to do is to eliminate the electronic controls as a possible cause for the problem. 1st step in diagnosing anything related to the EEC-IV system is to pull codes (see tests at www.dalidesign.com/hbook/eectest.html or pulling codes at www.fordfuelinjection.com). Resolve any codes that come up and see if that resolves the problem.
If you get all pass codes from the self-tests, and you still don't have 4th gear, then obtain a wiring diagram and make sure the wiring to the shift solenoid is all intact. Using the output state EEC-IV test, verify (with a voltmeter) that the computer can command the 3-4 shift.
If the computer can command the 3-4 shift, perform a road test and verify (again with a voltmeter) that the computer chooses to command the 3-4 shift. At this point, if the computer can and chooses to command the 3-4 shift, but the transmission isn't responding, the fault is hydraulic or mechanical in nature.
