To sum it all up

From the research I did on this forum, it seems that the V-10 exhaust is fairly efficient (as far as factory exhausts go) and the only real gains are made after you install headers. Then a full exhaust reaps benefits. Am I right?

Seems the best bang for the buck is a tuner / chip? I already have a K&N drop in filter.

Someone mentioned modifying the air intake box. Anyone want to further that suggestion?

Any other suggestions?

I have a 2004 F-250 and I am gonna wait until the 60,000 mile warranty expires before I really rip into this thing. Then I plan headers, whipple charger, full exhaust, etc.

I pull a 9500 lb enclosed car trailer a couple of times a month, so keeping low end torque is a priority.

I modified the air intake box on my 00 SD SC. I cut it almost completely off. Opened it up for more air. I left enough of an edge so the clamp has something to hold on to and went around the two fasteners at the bottom. I just pay much more attention to it and clean it more often. Worked for me.

OK, here we go,,,, before you spend a bunch of time and money on headers, intakes, it's important that you know they will perform. The 'ability' to get more air in, and out is a moot point if the heads will not allow the extra volume through. There are smart guys in the business who say, and can prove, that headers do not help on a stock motor. And this is a supercharger expert, I know others think conversely, and can prove the opposite, but it is something to consider. I have a friend who spent big money on a Banks kit for his 454 Suburban, it was about the same as a supercharger. He was very, very disappointed, he wanted to squeal the tires and run upper rpm like a DOHC motor would. He didn't tow, and he had no idea of how his 454 was different with long tube headers built for torque. Gale Banks is a smart guy, and could have done this guys motor for HP, but this guy never asked, just said "get 'er done'. All the V-10 headers I've seen are short tube, which won't help torque and may even cost you some. So educate yourself as much as possible, the s/c seems to be best by far for increased torque.
