It's probably done more often than one might think. Wasn't some Camaro or Trans Am powered by a de-tuned Corvette LT1 engine? Take for example the 2002 F250 and it's 7.3L diesel. It has two power ratings, one for the 6-speed manual (S6-650) and one for the 4-speed automatic (4R100):
7.3L DI Power Stroke®V8:
6-Speed Manual O/D - HD 275 HP @ 2800 rpm, 520 lb/ft @ 1600 rpm
Electronic 4-Spd Automatic 250 HP @ 2600 rpm, 505 lb/ft @ 1600 rpm
The marine version of the 8.1L puts out 450 HP while the one in a Chevy C2500 only puts out 340 HP. The marine version of the 6.0L puts out 385 HP while it's automotive cousin only puts out 300 HP.
have you ever noticed the gm has a niceer shifter handle and it shifts more smooth then ares?
Here's a quote from AutoWorld that talks about the shifter thing:
Improvements to the GM version of the same ZF S6-650 used by other OEMs give it many advantages such as a firmer shift lever and quieter operation via an extra bushing in the metal rail socket on which the stub lever rides (a small amount of noise and vibration occurs from the metal-to-metal contact between the stub lever and rail socket as the gears turn. GM bored-out the main shift rail socket and added the bushing to eliminate this irritant).
Never driven a ZF GM truck, I dont see enough of them to even get a chance to drive one. House22, you have a white SD 350 DRW right? I think I saw you at the sled pulls just north of Champaign last winter. Just curious if you have ever dynoed your truck......
Yes that was me that pulled 350 and 760ftlbs with pane when i had the pane on, and 307 and 648ftlbs on motor, iin Il pull i was running Di test programs that semmed alot stronger then the 307 of old.
Any problems with your transmission? I know the power rating of 520lb ft of tq is a continuous rating, and the trans will take alot more than that without being fully loaded, just trying to get an idea of how well they hold up to some massive power.
Tesax Cadilac I think House22 and I will have to roll on down to your place to take that truck for a ride when it is done! You might want to see who has put big power through the ZF6 so far, I know House22's has taken some big abuse, but I have seen some strokers put down over 1000fttq with the ZF6, I really don't think you will have a problem, I would think that you would want to fix any week spots you would come acrost before installing the motor, maybe you can find a couple guys that put big power through this thing and see what if anything they did to get it to take it, I know it's hard to find guys with strokers the put what you will be putting down though, why arn't you building a hot stroker? Not that I blame you, we all know the Cummins makes big power cheap and it's reliable....
I've always liked the Cummins motor, but would never buy it in a truck cause it comes wrapped in a Dodge. The SD is one of the best trucks out there in my opinion, and my truck has 200k on it now. Not that the PSD is worn out, I just wanted to do something different, and I have a 6BT sitting in my shop just waiting to go into something. I've been looking over on the dieselstop for info on big power through the ZF, and I think that as long as Im not too dumb with the power, it should hold up just fine for what I want to do. Im sure the tires will turn into a cloud of dust long before the trans blows anyway
