It will work with a little modification but you wont get much of a benefit at all. The zf6 has a lower 1st gear ratio than the zf5 but 5th gear in the zf5 and 6th in the zf6 are about the same. You wont lower rpms in high gear and you wont gain a mpg improvement. Not worth it imo.

IIRC the ZF6 is a larger tranny so you will need to make some space for it.

The ZF 6 output shaft is bigger, so you have to change the transfer case to a 281 or 283 if I remember the numbers right.

I also think the input shaft is 1.25" instead of 1.125" that the ZF 5 uses.

Transmission is bigger and much heavier in construction though.

ZF6 final drive ratio is different enough that it will make a difference at freeway speeds.

the zf6 has a oil pumo to run cooler lines up front which you would also need to make room for if i remember right. not a lot to gain from imo

from what iv read most threads end with its not worth it because there is little gain except and extra low gear. but is there a significant difference in ft# ratings compared to the zf5s, the 42 is 420 and the 47 is 470 i think i read somewhere.

After what my 42 has been through lately, and survived, I'm not changing it. I just rebuilt it and forgot how simple they were. And how easy to rebuild. The only fancy tool you really must have is a dial indicator and feeler gauges. For setting up synchro hub clearances and the bearing preload.
I'm just about ready to order an aux transmission though for behind the transfer case. That will make a huge difference in RPM at highway speeds and they have been around a long time. Anyone with enough power to wreck a zf42 probably gets mileage that is so crappy they don't do very much highway driving with it so who cares?

The gear vendors I guess is the only one left. The other company went under recently. I hope I can get it real soon. May have something else in the works right now that needs all our money first. I found a 41 foot boat with twin powerstrokes in it! It's a 75 model with 95 year engines!!!

If you like fast, don't get a ZF-6. They are great transmissions for pulling, because of the close ratios, but if you are trying to do a WOT 0-60, or something similar , there is 1 more gear shift between here and there.....

I have driven lots of both, and the ZF-6 is great, just not for drag racing

Sorry for bringing up an old post , but I am very interested in doing the ZF6 swap. This thread addressed a few things for the swap and if this all there is to it, I am going to do the swap.

If any one has anything more to add that may be a problem, I would appreciate knowing what it might be.

Thanks,
