I got a side tank for my78 4x4 and it is up and in place. The trouble is the gas from the back tank goes into the side tank. Is the selector valve stuck? And is there a way to re build this. I have tryed this thread in in the fuel forum but no help so far. Any help would be great. Thanks, Erv
I believe you have a plumbing problem. I think your '79 has a return line from the pump to the tank. This allows fuel to circulate back to the tank and be cooled, therefor helping eliminate vapor lock. If this is true then depending on how you plumbed in your extra tank you may be circulating the fuel to the extra tank instead of the rear tank. (path of least resistance)
If your selector valve is stuck it will cause your engine to draw from both tanks equally at the same time. However, this does not sound like your problem. I would say your fuel lines are routed wrong.
All the gas lines and hookups were still there. I just got a tank and rehooked it. But, last night I filled both tanks to half and came home and parked the truck in drive. It is pretty level. This morn I sarted to work and had a full tank in the side and the back was empty. That is strange! It must be the valve is stuck. Are these valves still around or do I go junking again? Thanks for the help. Erv
The selector valve is still readily available from any auto parts store. Just be sure to get the right one as there are many different models. Use your old one as a sample and be sure to follow the instructions exactly. The instructions will tell you what precautions to take so as not to cause another stuck valve. It will also show you which way is best for mounting and will discuss filters and such so as not to allow grit in between the valve and seat.
