I have a 1973 F250 with a 360 and an automatic.I do not have any brake or reverse lights, everything else works fine. I have replaced all the bulbs, replaced the brake light switch and went through the fuses. I have tested for power in the wires and the last place i can get power is coming out of the brake light switch. So what i need to know is where that wire goes that exits the brake light switch on the brake pedal. Somewhere between that switch and where it exits the cab i am losing power for the brake and reverse lights. Any help would be great.
If the '73 is similar to my '76 then the wiring harness exits the cab on the drivers side firewall by the hood hinge. There should be a group of connectors there, some go to the ignition control module etc, the one you want will route down past the steering box and along the frame rail to the rear of the truck. There is another connector at the back of the truck where the frame meets the bumper. It's not uncommon for the wires to come loose from the frame if you have had work done on the truck . Transmission, brake or fuel line work can result in the wiring harness sagging and landing on your exhaust or getting damaged by just about anything. Crawl underneath you truck with a flash lite and inspect the cable run for damage or signs of previous wire repairs that have given out.
Good luck and report back on what you find.
Read the tech article about testing/repairing rear lights, it will help you. I think the wire from the brake light switch goes to the turn signal switch in the column and then to the rear.
The brake lights should have nothing to do with the steering column but, if you say you have no hazard lights I would tend to think the turn signal/hazard light switch is the problem. It is relatively easy to replace and includes removing the steering wheel and unplugging the wireing harness to the switch. Once that is done you unscrew three screws on the switch itself and pull the wires through the column. The back up light switch is usually mounted on the tranny linkage below the floor pan on the drivers side I would check that also.
