1974 f100 tail light problem

I am having a problem with my tail lights. Two weeks ago, all my lights worked. Now, when I turn on the headlights or parking lights, the tail lights will not work, the brake lights do not work and the turn signal will come on and not blink. I can not think of anything I have done that would have affected the lights. I took the radio and speaker out and have replaced a couple of printed circuit board bulbs but that is it.

When the lights are off, the brake light and turn signal lights work fine.

I have changed the headlight switch but the same thing happens with both switches.

All the other lights work fine, headlights, marker lights, everything.

any ideas would be helpful.

you probably have a bad ground somewhere. try to look for loose or corroed wires. If that doesn't work you will need a schmetic and a test light.

Bad bulb sockets will also cause this problem. Sounds like a bad chassis ground to the bed.

There is a great tech article (Articles link at top of page) about testing and repairing rear lights on your pickup. Read through it. I would guess a bad ground to bad bulb socket.

On my '74 (having the same problems), not only did I clean up the grounding areas and use fresh connectors, but I reinforced the existing grounds by running an extra ground strap (braid) from the tail lights down to the frame.

They have worked great since!
