LAST EDITED ON 09-Nov-00 AT 05:57 PM (EST)[p]I was just told by the shop my intake and exhaust manifolds on my '82 4.9L are warped and that new ones cost in excess of $600 for the set. Can these be straightened or planed at a machine shop? Or do I start cruising the wrecking yards? I just replaced the engine and these leaks are noticable and effecting the idle.
I know that manifolds can be planed down, because I had it done on my 1931 Ford 1 and a half ton truck. I find it hard to believe that your manifolds are so warped that they can't be planed down. 600 dollars sounds like an awful lot of money for used manifolds. Usually parts from a salvage yard are 50 percent of new price. If I did
get used manifolds, I'd have them planed down too, just to make sure they are straight.
Good Luck, Let us know how it turns out !

You should be able to get a set from the junkyard. I had a set laying around for about 2 years, but I think I junked it last month. I'll check my parts stuff and if I still have it, you can have it for the cost of shipping. I'll let you know.
It would be just as cheap to put on an offy intake with a 390 4bbl holly and clifford headers for what the dealer quoted.
After I pulled the manifolds I checked the gasket and found that it had slipped down during the install, and the #1 cylinder was only about 50% sealed. The #2 was a little better. After changing out the gasket, it runs GREAT. No warped manifolds. Made my day.
