Grinding noise when I start the engine.
My truck has just started doing this three days ago when we finally dropped below freezing here. What happens is when I start the engine, immedately afterwards I hear a grinding noise from what seems to be just forward of the transmission, the grinding lasts a very short time(1 second). It also depends on how cold the engine is. If the engine is warmed up and then I restart it, I won't hear it at all. If the engine has set for a hour or two the grinding is very faint and brief. If the truck sits outside all night, it will grind loudly and almost twice. Like there is a split second interval where it stops and then starts again. I don't know if it is the engine (I just went over to synthetics), a belt, the tranny, or something else. If anybody has any words of wisdom, advice, or anything else it would be greatly appreciated.

I would pull out your starter and check the gear teath on the starter. It sounds to me like the flywheel and starter gear are not meshing correctly. The grinding you are hearing could be the result from metal shrinking as it gets cold which in turn does allow the gear teeth on the flywheel to mesh properly with the gear teeth on the starter.

I had the same prob with my 92' f-250. 351 engine w/ auto trans. It would act up only every now and then. It just continued to get worse until it finally went. My problem was in the selenoid mounted on the starter. I just replaced the entire starter/selenoid unit. It was the original starter so I can't be upset. I replaced it this past summer. Good luck.
