Is it elec ignition? Our 78 has elec ign, I think I have 12 volts on the pos side of the coil, was getting 4 volts after we finished the engine. It had been setting a while, the socket on the elec ign box was busted, the wires plugged into the matching colors, but I wasn't trusting it to be correct, so I replaced it, still no spark and only 4 volts. After tracing the wiring, pulling it from the loom, a factory clip connection was found on the drivers side near the fire wall wiring to the inside fuse box, after unlocking it and separation it was found to be totally corroded. Cleaned it up and lubed it with dia-electric grease, after checking it with an ohm meter, checking for possible breaks from there back to the coil, and checking the other side for voltage, should be 12 volts, but no less than 10, reconnect then check voltage again at the coil side. That was it for us, just that corroded connection, seemed severe at first, but ended up being simple.
