'86 restoration questions
1) What years are correct for the boxes? '80-'86? or are the boxes the same up until '96 or whenever they changed to the present body style. And...will a box made for dual gas tanks line up with the opening on single tank truck (which mine is)?
2) Is the striping (about 1 inch wide, 2 colors) that seperates the 2 colors on a two-tone truck available anymore? My truck is blue over gray and the 2 colors of the striping are navy with light blue on both sides.
3) Any sources for dash pads or door panels? Has anyone tried the vinyl paint for the interior pieces?
4) And lastly, what is the correct color for my bumper and stock rims. It's the color of gray primer, but there's got to be a paint code for it. I'm guessing there may be a spray can available from Ford since its a common color.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
2. 87-91 are of a flat faced design, not much different from 80-86 just the bed has some differnces, like different creases in the side around the rear wheel, on single tank models the gas filler door is behind the rear wheel, unlike in front on the 80-86, all are on drivers side, tales light are of a smooth design, on 80-86- has rigid talelights.
3. 92-96 has a more rounded front end, rear view mirrors change, but mostly are simular to 87-91.
the 80-86 trucks are very simular in design except mainly the front ends and interiors, and technology, body parts can be interchanged, paint scehmes were basicly the same throughout 80-86, this is about the whole story of 80-86 f150 trucks.
im thinking of putting a 92-96 front end on my truck which can be done.
hope any of this info helps.

The vinyl paint for the plastic interior trim works well, but make sure you clean the pieces very well or the paint will peel in a very short time. Also use a good etching primer, check your local body shop supply house for the right stuff.
As far as the paint codes for your bumper and wheels, check with your local Ford parts Dept, they should be able to give you the codes and tell you if the paint is still available.
Good luch with your restoration, Mr. Cricket
On my 95 I have color keyed grill, front and rear bumpers and the last owner even painted the wheels the same color. I get quite a few comments on this, and have even noticed people in the area starting to paint the wheels body color now. But, I have seen some that didn't look all the great.
