if memory serves (it comes & goes), doesnt the '85 have more angular corners above & below the taillights? 'cuz the '88-'90 tailgates are much smoother & less angular, so they wouldn't line up with the bodylines of an '85, as well as possible not closing properly (i know they have different tailgate handle mechanisms, but i dont know if the latches & strikers are the same)
Your correct, the lines are different, but the height is the same. I don't either know if the latches will hook together correctly. However, as I have stated before, I have seen a few with the later model tailgates(87-96;97). Good luck
Hi, I tried this swap the body lines aren't that noticeable, the problem is with the latch you need to take the whole thing off of the other bed strikers and all Oh yeah, don't forget the bottom supports because they also are a different size.

Fatforty is right. Get the strikers and pivots off of the donor truck as well. I have a 94 tailgate on mine. was there when I bought the truck. The kid had gutted it and put goate latchs on the inside of the bed to hold it shut lol. I went to the junk yard and got the strikers and pivot points off of a 95 and put the tailgate back together. works like a charm. Really it isn't that notiable from the body lines. Oh well at least he found a black tailgate to go on a black truck.
