85 Ranger is running like it has a clogged fuel filter...it kicks in great...then sputters and looses power...kicks in...then sputters. I changed both the large and small in line filters. It also has a new high pressure pump. Could the in tank pump cause this? Or is it more likely to be a spark plug or wire problem? It is very intermittent, that it why it feels more like a clogged filter. How much trouble is it to drop the tank and replace the in tank filter? Thanks
Just recently bought it so I don't know, probably been a while since they were changed. I did take the plugs out and clean them. I thought if it were the plugs it may be more of a constant missing, instead of intermittent. Was yours intermittent? Thanks for the help. I will definitely replace them before I go to the trouble of dropping the tank.
Also, did you happen to notice- when it sputters, is there darker smoke coming out of the tail pipe? If so, it could be a fuel regulator or oxygen sensor.
Tnx. Have not noticed dark smoke. Changed plugs/wires...seemed to help some, but still sputters and loses power when going up hill. Also, won't start when cold. I have to take off air filter hose to throttle body and squirt fuel into throttle body. It fires and after a time or two will continue to run. It's like I have to prime it. If it has been running awhile then it will restart, but not if it sits overnight. Reminder, this truck sat (with fuel in tank) for a year. How hard is it to drop tank and replace filter? What should I look out for?
I've had the same problem for over one year now. Spent megga $$$ and no one can fix it. I started by sputtering like you, but now it's all the time. I've changed the fuel injectors, plugs & wires, fuel filter, and several others but still....she sputters. Someone told me that they had a problem with a Ford that had rust in the tank, but I have no trash in the tank and the filter is clean. I'm really getting tired of this. Sounds like your problem. It drinks gas like it's an F-350. HELP! Let me know if you discover the answer. Thanks.
No I have not. I was told that the fuel pump was o.k.....maybe it's becuase I'm a girl....but I didn't know about an intake fuel pump. How do I find out if that is it? Thanks.
I would say you have repaired /replaced everything else BUT the pump. Process of elimination. Make sure all filters have been replaced. Sometimes there is an inline filter not listed in the manuals, as well as the filter on the rail. Also, if your truck does have an in tank pump, as mine does, there is a filter attached to that pump as well. Keep me posted. Allen
I don’t know if this will help at all, but I too had the problem with loss of power traveling uphill. It got to the point that I had to pull off the road and let it sit for a while. I was driving a 1988 Mazda B2600 PU through the mountains of WV. I ended up putting a choke pull on my carburetor and that fixed my problem.
Did you find the answer to this problem? I have an 88 that is having a similar problem. I changed plug, cap, rotor, wires, coil and filters. It still does it. Please help.
I am curious if you ever got resolution to your issue with having to remove the Air Filter and spray starter fluid in your carb. I am having the same problem with an 84 F250, which I bought off of someone who had let it sit for 5 years after her husband passed away. I have had the Carb rebuilt and had the Fuel pump replaced and no luck... If I do get it started, it will run (although rather rough) and will continue to start for a few hours....but once 3-4 hours has passed, I am back to pulling the air filter and spraying the starter fluid. If you have any ideas, I would sure appreciate! Thanks, Jeanine
this is just an idea but if the truck has been sitting for that long you may have old fuel which has turned into crap inside the fuel needles and carberation system.
When fuel gets old it has a tendincy to turn into a slug like compound, if this gets into the carberation it will plug up the jets or injectors. In either case it will idol fine but will have no power.
Not sure though I would need to know what carb and motor.
Hope this helps.
