ok i have a crazy idea but i think that i am going to try it. I have 1969 F-100 well i want to do some cool stuff to it. I want to make it a hardtop convertible.
I know its crazy, but how much would have to do. I am going to take the gas tank out of the cab so i will have more room. Then i want to chop the top off so that i can have my convertible.
What do you guess think.
this guy helped me out to get an idea of what it would look like.
the biggest thing that i can see from your art work there will be your door windows. the pic that has a roof also has the wondow frames, the convertable truck didn't. i'm sure there is a way to get a good window seal like any other convertable, it's just going to take some thinking
trying to get some advise from others on something that i have not thought of yet
It's probably worth doing. I've seen show trucks with the tops cut off but can't remember what they were based on. One of the things to remember is that the roof adds strength to the body. You'll have to replace that strength or the body will flex and the doors will never be right. But it shouldn't be as much trouble as a sedan because the roof isn't adding stability to the frame. (I don't think.) Don't know if you plan on putting some kind of a top back on for rainy days but if you are I'd just go with a carson top. Also if you're going to the trouble of cutting the top off it'd look better if you chopped it 2 - 4 inches and laid the windshield back a few degrees. But that's just me.
you could do it. first thing is to weld temporary supports inside the cab so when the to comes off it doesnt flex. the make new permanent supports. i thought long and hard about doing this to my 53. i thought about taking small diameter tubing, like 1 1/2 inch exhaust tubing and bending it to follow the back of the cab at the top to follow around from door to door. weld and smooth that in. then making a frame for a top and having some one make material for it. its alot of work but i think the hardest is that first cut.''got *****''
I got the ***** i am ready to get in it and cut it now. I am making braces to go under the cab for extra support. I am also going along the inside with 1" square tubing to help barace it to keep it from flexing. I have taken the gas tank out of the cab and going to put it under the back bed. The gas tank is out now. I am thinking about cutting it and having it where it will fold down in the back bed.
I am thinking about making it where it will fold together and then lay in the back bed. I am working on that now.
I have got it all measured and figured out. now i have just got to get it on the truck. Then after that. I will have my convert.
What i figured i would do is cut the top of the doors of. Split those in half. THen mount those to the top of the cab so I would still have some support for my window when it is up.
