1988 Transfer case
Well, here we go!!! Was out "dragging" the yard last night. I don't know how many of you have ever done this, but I hooked a 350 pound sled to the rear of the Ranger and drag it around the yard to get rid of the weeds and ground cover. We live in the desert and if it is green, you just have to kill it! 
Anyhow all was going well, cruising around and around and around the yard in 1st and 2nd gear 4L.
Almost done, when I hear this loud pop, and the the truck starts making a thumping sound every second or so.
I brought the thing to a quick halt and said something like, "Wow, I wonder what that may have been!"
My daughter who was in the back yard, says, "Yuck, Daddy, the truck looks like it is going to the bathroom!"
I look underneath, and sure enough there is transmission fluid flowing out like there was no tomorrow. ("Gee, that doesn't look good.")
Anyhow after the short inspection, I found that the tail housing of the transfer case had cracked. I believe it is a BW 1350, but haven't really checked into it to far yet. My question(s):
What could have caused this?
Where is the best place to get a tail section?
Or should I take this time to upgrade the transfer case to a better model?
2.9L, automatic, manual locking hubs

Ok, maybe those weren't the correct questions to ask, since nobody has responded to me.
How much will a transfer case run? New/rebuilt? Should I upgrade or is the BW 1350 a good model? How hard are they to rebuild yourself? Is it worth the time, effort? Where can I get a rebuild diagram, as I haven't been able to find one on line yet?
