I have a 96 F-350. A few days ago it was hard to start so I changed the fuel filter and filled the tanks. It was hard to start yesterday morning. This morning it would not start after several tries. The temperature was about 38 degrees. I waited for the glow plugs as usual, tried to start it, but it wouldn't fire and huge amount of gray smoke from exhaust and some from under the hood. I let it set a few minutes and tried it again, same thing. Did this several times, same thing. Would some one please tell me what you think my problem is? I would really appreciate any help. I live 34 miles from town, so do a lot of my own maintence and repairs.
Before you dive into the glow plug side of things.....make one quick check. As your turning the engine over; look down at the tach. Is it moving at all? If it isn't, I'd say that you probably have a CPS that's gone out.
Also, check your batteries with a tester...weak batteries can also make the engine hard to start
I had bad batteries after I bought my '96 PSD, but if it was enough power in them to turn the engine, it started. Period! So if you have a bad battery you won't be able to crank the engine for a long time. I'd check the GP-thingy....
Not trying to argue, just sharing from personal experience. Weak batteries can make the truck very hard to start. The engine may turn over, but not fast enough to fire. It has happened to me, and several of our work trucks.

Yes, I agree there, but in this case IKE said: "This morning it would not start after several tries".... That you cannot do with bad batteries..
I found a loose battery terminal. Seems to be O.K. now. Also, weather is a lot warmer last few days. Thank you guys for all your input. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions. Thanks again,
