Melling MTF-4 cam

Hi All

I have a bone stock 390 complete with original bearings and pistons. I was hoping to use as many original parts as possible--heads and rocker assemblies, in order to save some money. I would like to build a torque motor using the following parts.
Original 390 block--Honed
Original C6AE-R heads--Exaust ported
Sterling H395P pistons with a pin height of 1.759
Melling MTF-4 cam
This all comes in a kit for a pretty good price. My question is-- Is this a fair to good combo, or should I go with a Crane 901 or 941 cam.
I would like to have off idle torque, because this will be pulling around a heavy 4wd crew cab.
Thanks for any help or ideas.
Todd

I would not go with that cam. One of our users on here has one and he does NOT like it. I would go with the 343941 cam instead.

Thanks Rusty,
I searched back and found that post. Do you know about what c.r. I will have, and will the 941 cam work ok with a non-adjustable valve train?

Compression ratio depends on the the volume of the combusion chambers in your cylinder heads, the head gasket you use, the compression height of your pistons, and the volume of the dish or valve pockets in your pistons. To say what your compression will be without knowing all of these things would be guessing. If I had to guess, I'd say 9.5:1. But I'm probably wrong, I'm not familiar with the Sterling H395P pistons. If they're stock 360 pistons, and everything else is typical then you should be around 9.5:1.

The 941 cam should work with the non-adjustable valvetrain, but there may be some hoops you have to jump through. To do it right, you'd need an adjustable length checking pushrod, mock up the engine and check the required length for each pushrod. Add in your desired lifter preload, and send off for a set of custom length pushrods. Most guys, myself included, find it easier to go to the adjustable valvetrain setup.
