Since you are on the '97 F150 page I'll assume you have a '97 F250 LD (body like the 150s).
If the above is true, then you have a 31 spline 10.25 inch Sterling (Visteon) rear with either a 3.31 or 3.73 gear set. Easiest way to check: The tag hanging off the differential cover bolt. The second line has a code that looks like this:
3 31 10 2 xxxx
Usually the first number is under the bolt, a letter "L" may fall in the blank section (this tells us if you have the limited slip option), the first three numbers give you the ratio, the next two or three give you the ring gear or "rear end" size. In the case of the example above its a 10.25" rear with an open 3.31 gear.
