I have just about talked myself into regearing my 88 f150 5.0, aod 31" tall tires with 3.55 rearend to 4.10 gears. I don't have a factory tach but the aftermarket tach says 2700 at 57 mph in direct drive.
At an indicated 57 mph I figure that I am going about 62 taking the 31" tires into account.
That rpm doesn't agree with the various rpm calculators I have tried.
What kind of rpm at speed do the rest of you get?
I have a small cabover camper and tow a small boat when vacationing and think some more gearing would help on those 7000 foot mountain passes. As it is, that little 302 needs to spin around 3000 rpm or more to make power, which with the present gearing is faster than I want to go.
Any thoughts?
thanks -greg
I can't come up with your numbers either. Going from 29" to 31" tires would give you the 57 indicated/61 actual variance, but by my calcs you should only be pulling about 2450 revs at that speed. Either your tsach or your speedo is way off or you've got bigger gears than you think
Hey they're, I got an "89 5.0 and I think the 2400 or so RPM number is right. at about 2700 in Drive I'm doin 65 or so on 31"s with no correction. Overdrive puts me at about 1700. I've got a factory tach and 3.55's as well. I hear you on the powerband though. I've been thinking to moving up a notch on gearing. But your aftermarktet tach looks to be off...
