Its been awhile since I took delivery on a new ordered vehicle (30 yrs); I remember this thing called a "dealer prep charge" which according to my late car salesman brother, included incidentals like "...cleaning up the mess the factory left them with..." Things like ignition timing, balancing tires, cleaning interior, polishing exterior, gluing loose chrome, etc. Does this stuff still go on? If it does, I would be hesitant to take delivery at the docks, or other than the selling dealer for that matter.

The factory/museum delivery program in Bowling Green, KY is awesome. They treat new owners like royalty. We have been there and done that. My son got to bring the Corvette to life on the assembly line before it went across the road to the museum. They document the delivery with photos and the PDI (Predelivery Inspection) is done by a special team at the museum. No question it is one of the best options available for the Corvette.

No, just lots of plastic and shrink-wrap, nothing like the old days. The road test and fluid check is important, and other minor things like checking to make sure everything works as advertised.

they do it all the time..I did it luckily I knew the dealer here..they just wouldnt offer a good price like i could get out of state. Hood Northlake in LA drop shipped to Dallas..it was pretty flawless.

Maxie Price sells a ton of corvettes and drop ships them all over the place.

'Vette drop ships are pretty rare. Even rarer is the dealer that will accept one on a drop ship. The C6 really re-arranged the 'Vette market, because the cars hot enough not to have to do much in the way of selling them. Nationally, last time I looked, there was something like a 12 day supply on the ground.

With a 50% non-refundable deposit once Ford schedules the order for production. This is now the ONLY way the owner of this dealer will consider another drop-ship.

The 50% non-refundable deposit goes to you? Or the dealer that is to receive the drop-ship?

Thanks!

PS...I take it by your reply, this dealer has had problems in the past? Or maybe just does not like drop-ship process?

Hi,
I wonder whether anybody can help here: I live in Namibia (that's in Africa between Angola and South Africa) and would like to buy and import a Ford Pick-up truck (preferable a F250 Diesel) to my country. Has anybody experience or the right contact of companies to organize the export procedures and shipping to the west coast of Africa? What type of engine / gearbox configuration would be the most reliable for a country with poor parts availability?
Regards
Derek

Hi Derek,

I reckon the best would be to purchase an F250 through Ford South Africa www.ford.co.za
They offer the most reliable engine transmission combo available in ANY F-Series.
The 6 cylinder MWM Diesel with a 5 speed ZF transmission. It doesn't have any electronics either, so if any problems are encountered with them (and they are few and far between) they can be fixed by any diesel mechanic.

Is Namibia a LHD or RHD country?

Feel free to join us in the International Chapter, I can help further there.

Hi,
thanks for fast answer and for the info.
The problem with these cars in South Africa is they are all fairly new and very expensive. And I would prefer a big V8 as well.
Namibia is RHD like South Africa. Since I live at the border to Angola (=LHD) registration of either type is possible for me here. I was also thinking of trying to sell this type of cars to Angola which does not allow RHD vehicles anymore. The crucial factor would obviously be the shipping costs from the US...

The other crucial factor, for a US dealer, is the word "export" is a great big NO No. Really big no no.

For us, it's a violation of the franchise agreement.

I do not understand. How can buying a car from a privat person violate a franchise agreement? Are the cars shown in the classified section all from dealers? I thought most of them are from private sellers. It would be sad not to be able to bring those nice cars over here to show people that there are alternatives to all the Jap stuff driving around here. I was on holiday last year in Denver, Colorado and I was really impressed with these trucks. I certainly would not like to obtain anything in a non-legal way, so I wanted to know how the situation is.
